The Cost of Gratitude:

When Being ‘Chosen’ Silences the Wound

A few posts ago, I shared a simple but powerful truth: Adoption begins with loss.

Since then, I’ve received a wave of messages; many from adoptees, opening up about something that’s often hidden beneath the surface:

Gratitude.

Not the organic kind that flows from love or belonging.
But the kind that is expected. Imposed.

One woman shared that, growing up, she was always reminded how “lucky” she was to be adopted.

So, she took on that role. She smiled. She performed. She said all the right things.

But privately, she wrestled with questions she couldn’t ask. Longings she didn’t understand. A sadness she didn’t feel she was allowed to grieve.

“Every time I wanted to talk about feeling disconnected,” she said,
“someone would say, ‘But look at the life you’ve had, never experiencing any loss, what do you have to be sad about?’

So, she stayed silent. She thought her pain must be wrong.

This is the cost of gratitude.

When the adoption narrative centres around being “chosen,” “rescued,”

or what has been gained, adoptees are often left with no room to express grief, confusion, or loss.

And yet:
You can be grateful for the family who raised you…
And still long for the mother you bonded with in utero and separated from.
You can have love… and still carry loss.
You can have a “good life”… and still feel the ache of what never got to grow.
