In this ‘Glimpse Into’ series, Kimberley Rankin shares the key moments from her adoption journey that have shaped her life. Across nine heartfelt glimpses, she has spoken about her search for identity, the ache of the primal wound, the silent weight of grief, the complexities of reunion, the challenges of relationships, the transformative experience of motherhood, the longing for family and belonging, the voice of her wounded inner child, and lastly the discovery of connection and purpose.
Kimberley’s reflections provide a glimpse into her emotional fingerprint as an adoptee. And the imprints left by separation and loss, creating wounds of abandonment and rejection, compounded by disenfranchised grief, and the lack of societal awareness surrounding the adoption emotional and psychological trauma. Adoption begins with loss. Leaving the adoptee to navigate missing pieces, invisible grief, and the lifelong pull for connection and belonging between two families and two worlds.
Through sharing vulnerably, Kimberley invites adoptees, biological parents, adoptive families and those who love and support them, to better understand the unseen layers of adoption. Along with her mother, Karen, they have utilised their co-creation of a loving mother-daughter relationship as the foundation for The Emotional Fingerprint of an Adoptee; a platform dedicated to igniting conversations and asking questions that have been avoided, shedding light on the deeper layers of the adoption experience.
