Unthought Knowings:
The Silent Scripts That Shape Self-Worth and Identity
By Karen Chaston

Most people never question their connection to their mother.
It just was.
Present. Familiar. Taken for granted.
Until that one moment…
You’re a child in a busy shopping centre.
You turn around – and she’s gone.
Panic floods in. Your heart races.
The tears come before the logic.
It feels like the world has shifted under your feet.
And then… relief.
You spot her. You’re scooped up. Reassured. Safe again.
That moment stays with you – not just as a memory,
but as a feeling your body remembers.
When recalled, it brings back the same fear, the same panic, the same ache.
Because being separated from your mum – even for a moment – imprints something that words can’t erase.
But for many adoptees, that moment of separation isn’t just a moment.
This is the world they are born into.
Before they understood words…
Before they had their story…
There was a shift. A separation. A rupture.
And their tiny nervous system registered it.
Their body whispered:
Something’s missing.
Something’s changed.
I was with her… now I’m not.
There is no instant reunion.
No comforting arms.
Just an invisible rupture – that the body feels, even before words exist.
That’s an unthought knowing.
It’s not a thought. Not a memory.
It’s a truth held in their body.
The nervous system quietly whispers:
Something’s wrong.
Something’s missing.
I was with her… now I’m not.
And from that preverbal knowing, their child’s begins to make sense of the silence.
Not with facts.
But with stories – survival stories.
Stories like:
I must have done something wrong.
I wasn’t good enough to be kept.
Love can leave without warning.
What do I need to do to stay this time?
If I stay quiet, perfect, pleasing — maybe I’ll be safe.
These stories become internal blueprints.
They shape how an adoptee sees the world – and themselves.
They often lead to low self-esteem, people-pleasing, hyper-independence, or deep anxiety in relationships.
Not because anything is “wrong” with them.
But because their body once knew something was different; and no one explained it or validated it.
These are the unthought knowings.
And they don’t just sit quietly in the background.
They start writing silent scripts.
Scripts that shape how an adoptee sees themselves…
Their worth.
Their place in the world.
Their right to love and be loved.
And unless we give them voice and bring them into light,
They keep whispering the same old story… for their entire life.
Have you ever carried a story that didn’t come from words… but from something your body felt and never forgot?
