What If the Adoptee Was Never the Missing Piece…

 But the One Who Was Missing?

By Karen Chaston

Adoptees often feel like they don’t quite fit.
Like something’s missing.
A gap they can’t explain.
A piece they never received.

But what if… they are not the ones with the missing piece?
What if they are the piece that was always missing?

In her world.
In her heart.
At the other end of the emotional umbilical cord.

The ache of separation doesn’t just live in the adoptee.
It echoes in their mother too; often buried, often silenced, often shamed, but there all the same.

Maybe the adoptee isn’t broken.
Maybe they’ve always been whole; just have been trying to fit their triangle into another’s square,

disconnected from the part of themselves that lives in another.

And maybe… after years of reflection and a deep yearning for answers, they choose reunion.

But the piece doesn’t fit.
Not at first.

And instead of the perfect fit they imagined, there’s resistance;
as if something invisible, a fog or a wall, is keeping these two triangles from truly intertwining.

So, what stops their emotional fingerprints from aligning?

It’s the years that have shaped them separately.
Their identities were formed apart.
Their separation was traumatising.
Their griefs were unspoken.
Their fears unshared.

But this isn’t failure.
It’s the beginning of something more honest.
More vulnerable. More real.

Because real connection isn’t found in the moment of reunion;
it’s built, layer by layer; through mutual recognition, healing,
the courage to show up even when it’s hard,
and the intentional creation of meaningful, magical, memorable moments.

That’s how that piece is perfectly placed where it has always belonged.
That’s when true healing begins.
That’s when they begin to thrive and grow into their authentic selves.
