Why Adoption-Informed Frameworks Matter in Therapy
By Karen Chaston

It’s official. The Emotional Fingerprint of an Adoptee: The Eight Essential Lessons
– Volume One: The Foundational Years is now ACA OPD approved and PACFA CPD endorsed.
This supports the growing recognition that adoption is not a one-time life event.
It can be an emotional and psychological imprint.
Many adoptees enter counselling struggling with thoughts and feelings they can’t fully explain,
because so much of what shaped who they are occurred pre-verbally,
before conscious memory, and has often been dismissed, minimised, disenfranchised, or misunderstood by society,
leaving their experience without language and without space to be acknowledged.
Often, they are searching for answers and insights that finally make sense of their behavioural patterns, such as:
• “I feel like I don’t belong anywhere.”
• “I’m expecting to be abandoned in relationships.”
• “I adapt and people-please to fit in.”
• “I shut down or run away when emotions feel unsafe.”
• “I fear rejection, even when things are okay.”
Research shows that early relational experiences can be encoded implicitly and
expressed later through emotional responses, attachment strategies, and protective behaviours.
This is why an adoption-informed framework can change outcomes.
When adoption is overlooked in clinical formulation, the client often turns it inward and concludes:
“I’m the problem.”
“I’m too much.”
“I’m not enough.”
Our purpose is to transform the way adoptees and their families understand, process, and heal from the emotional complexities of adoption.
By addressing deep-seated wounds of rejection, abandonment, identity fragmentation, and belonging,
we support adoptees to reclaim their sense of self, strengthen emotional resilience, and build meaningful connections.
Through our ACA-approved and PACFA-endorsed programs,
we aim to create a lasting ripple effect that fosters generational healing and reframes adoption through empathy,
understanding, honesty, and emotional empowerment.
If you’re committed to deepening your trauma-informed practice and strengthening the way you support clients,
I’d love to share the program overview with you.
